While these technologies are great on their own merit, the reality is that in order to reap the benefits, someone has to program these devices to develop useful applications. Historically, text-based high-level programming languages provided the first productive alternative to develop targeted applications. As more networked computing platforms enter the mainstream, the programming complexities of text based languages becomes a limiting factor, especially for domain experts who are typically not programming or computer science experts. The G programming language provides the next generation programming alternative allowing users to develop interactive parallel programs whether they have extensive programming experience or not. It's graphical syntax and constructs allow researchers, teachers, students and even children to program complex devices and systems in minutes rather than hours, days or even months. G is a data flow graphical programming language. Originally designed to address test and measurement needs, its general purpose programming attributes has been applied in telecommunications, biomedical, aerospace, environmental and many other industries. In general, G is used in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects and programs but is not limited to STEM. The book was written to help the user learn the G programming syntax and begin developing G programs quickly and easily. Although familiarity with programming concepts could help learning G, the book assumes the user has had no previous exposure to any programming languages. Therefore, to avoid confusion, no pseudocode or syntax comparisons are made with text-based programming languages. All examples in this book are working graphical examples and have been tested thoroughly. Chapter 1 is an introductory tutorial providing a reference for beginners and seasoned programmers alike. Subsequent chapters provide more details on the G syntax building up to the development of parallel programs that run on multicore platforms. We have hooked our computers to the Internet, where we can access information and transmit messages. The Internet is a very large computer network. Computer networks are so important in our daily life that they have become indispensable to us. The closest cousin of a computer network is a transportation network, but computer networks are now taking work away from the transportation networks. Transportation networks — like traffic engineering — had a body of knowledge that could readily be applied to computer networks. For example, we used to rely on sending letters to communicate with friends and relatives living far away. All these letters needed to use transportation vehicles such as trucks, ships or aeroplanes. Now, many letters have been replaced by electronic mail (e-mail). Computer networks deliver e-mails, thereby reducing the work of physically delivering letters through the transportation network. Computer systems, including both hardware and software, emerged as big machines called mainframe computers. In the 1960s, mainframe computers were accommodated inside a computer room. Cables ran from this room to connect to the terminals of the end users. In the late 1970s, mini computers became affordable. They challenged the mainframe computer. In the early 1980s, affordable personal computers (PCs) also came onto the market, challenging both mainframe and mini computers. PCs allowed end users to get the benefits of tremendous computing power at an affordable price. During the initial adoption of PCs, data transfer between personal computers was done through 5¼-inch floppy disks. People then saw the need to connect all these mini and personal computers together. Physical cables were used to link them. The connected computers, together with the cable links, formed a network, though the distance between these connected computers was usually relatively short. The computers were ‘local’ to a particular office location, and hence this type of configuration was called a local area network (LAN). LANs were originally targeted to meet the data transfer requirements for PCs within a private company, and also originally used for data, not voice traffic. Hence, there was little motivation to connect the LAN to a public telephone or telecom network. The need for distributed computing arose after more end users had been educated in using a personal computer. The proliferation of the Internet pushed to break through this private network ‘barrier’ to allow connection of every computer through the standard Internet interface. With the advancement of Internet technologies, networks can now support various services including e-mail, Web browsing, multimedia communication, real-time voice communication and video streaming. This book is for people who have never programmed before. As a result, the order of presentation is unusual. The book starts with scalar values and works up to vectors and matrices very gradually. This approach is good for beginning programmers, because it is hard to understand composite objects until you understand basic programming semantics. But there are problems: • The MATLAB documentation is written in terms of matrices, and so are the error messages. To mitigate this problem, the book explains the necessary vocabulary early and deciphers some of the messages that beginners find confusing. • Many of the examples in the first half of the book are not idiomatic MATLAB. I address this problem in the second half by translating the examples into a more standard style. The book puts a lot of emphasis on functions, in part because they are an important mechanism for controlling program complexity, and also because they are useful for working with MATLAB tools like fzero and ode45. I assume that readers know calculus, differential equations, and physics, but not linear algebra.
