Many organic compounds also have a wide range of applications in industry and health care, e.g. fuel, oil, detergents, body lotion and cosmetics.&#13;
Organic chemistry is therefore an important branch of chemistry.&#13;
Advanced organic chemistry involves the strategy of organic synthesis, which is a&#13;
series of chemical reactions for the construction of large, complex organic compounds from small, simple building blocks of starting materials. An organic chemist must develop advanced knowledge of synthetic tools, and learn how to apply these theoretical strategies to real examples.</text>

Disaccharides are formed via dehydration synthesis, and the bond linking them is referred to as a glycosidic bond (glyco- = “sugar”). Three disaccharides  are important to humans.                 <text>In this new millenium, as the world faces new and extreme challenges, the importance of acquiring a solid foundation in chemical principles has become increasingly important to understand the challenges that lie ahead. Moreover, as the world becomes more integrated and interdependent, so too do the scientific disciplines. The divisions between  fields such as chemistry, physics, biology, environmental sciences, geology, and materials science, among others, have become less clearly defined. The goal of this text is to address the increasing close relationship among various &#13;
disciplines and to show the relevance of chemistry to contemporary issues in a pedagogically approachable manner. Because of the enthusiasm of the majority of first-year chemistry students for biologically and medically relevant  topics, this text uses an integrated approach that includes explicit discussions of biological and environmental  applications of chemistry. Topics relevant to materials science are also introduced to meet the more specific needs of engineering students. To facilitate integration of such material, simple organic structures, nomenclature, and reactions are introduced very early in the text, and both organic and inorganic examples are used wherever possible. This approach emphasizes the distinctions between ionic and covalent bonding, thus enhancing the students’ chance of success in the organic chemistry course that traditionally follows general chemistry. </text>

                <text>The goal of this textbook is not to make you an expert. True expertise in any field is a years-long endeavor. Here I will survey some of the basic topics of chemistry. This survey should give you enough knowledge to appreciate the impact of chemistry in everyday life and, if necessary, prepare you for additional instruction in chemistry. Throughout each chapter, I present two features that reinforce the theme of the textbook—that chemistry is all around you. The first is a feature titled, appropriately, “Chemistry Is Everywhere.” Chemistry Is Everywhere” focuses on the personal hygiene products that you may use every morning: toothpaste, soap, and shampoo, among others. These products are chemicals, aren’t they? Ever wonder about the chemical reactions that they undergo to give you clean and healthy teeth or shiny hair? I will explore some of these chemical reactions in future chapters. But this feature makes it clear that chemistry is, indeed, everywhere. The other feature focuses on chemistry that you likely indulge in every day: eating and drinking. In the “Food and Drink App,” I discuss how the chemistry of the chapter applies to things that you eat and drink every day. Carbonated beverages depend on the behavior of gases, foods contain acids and bases, and we actually eat certain rocks. (Can you guess which rocks without looking ahead?) Cooking, eating, drinking, and metabolism—we are involved with all these chemical processes all the time. These two features allow us to see the things we interact with every day in a new light—as chemistry.</text>

                <text>These are lecture notes for AME 20231, Thermodynamics, a sophomore-level undergraduate course taught in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. The objective of the course is to survey practical and theoretical problems in classical thermodynamics. The emphasis is on the axiomatic approach to equilibrium thermodynamics and its application to practical devices. However, there are some brief appeals to the non-equilibrium and molecular underpinnings of thermodynamics. The notes draw often on the text speciﬁed for the course, Borgnakke and Sonntag’s (BS) Fundamentals of Thermodynamics, Seventh Edition, John Wiley, Hoboken, NJ, 2009, especially Chapters 1-12, 14, and 17. In general the nomenclature of BS is used, and much of the notes follow a similar structure as the text. Some example problems have been directly taken from BS and other texts; speciﬁc citations are given where appropriate. These notes emphasize problem-solving and rigorous development of the underlying classical theory; the student should call on other reference materials to ﬁll some of the gaps. It should also be remembered that practice is essential to the learning process; the student would do well to apply the techniques presented here by working many problems. An unusual aspect of the notes is the inclusion of accompanying text and ﬁgures related to the history of classical thermodynamics. Where possible, citations of original work are provided; most citations are linked directly to the original source material via click-able text. Additionally, an extensive annotated bibliography is provided. This is an attempt to ﬁll gaps in most modern undergraduate texts, which at best provide small guidance to original thermodynamics scholarship.</text>

These compounds play a critical role in biology and ecology, Earth sciences and geology, physics, industry, medicine and — of course — chemistry. At ﬁrst glance, the new material that organic chemistry brings to the table may seem complicated and daunting, but all it takes is concentration and perseverance. Millions of students before you have successfully passed this course and you can too!&#13;
This ﬁeld of chemistry is based less on formulas and more on reactions between various molecules under diﬀerent conditions. Whereas a typical general chemistry question may ask a student to compute an answer with an equation from the chapter that they memorized, a&#13;
more typical organic chemistry question is along the lines of ”what product will form when substance X is treated with solution Y and bombarded by light”. The key to learning organic chemistry is to understand it rather than cram it in the night before a test. It is all well and good to memorize the mechanism of Michael addition, but a superior accomplishment would be the ability to explain why such a reaction would take place. </text>

    Starches are polymers of glucose. They occur in long chains called amylose or branched chains called amylopectin, both of which are stored in plant-based foods and are relatively easy to digest.&#13;

    Glycogen is also a polymer of glucose, but it is stored in the tissues of animals, especially in the muscles and liver. It is not considered a dietary carbohydrate because very little glycogen remains in animal tissues after slaughter; however, the human body stores excess glucose as glycogen, again, in the muscles and liver.&#13;

    Cellulose, a polysaccharide that is the primary component of the cell wall of green plants, is the component of plant food referred to as “fiber”. In humans, cellulose/fiber is not digestible; however, dietary fiber has many health benefits. It helps you feel full so you eat less, it promotes a healthy digestive tract, and a diet high in fiber is thought to reduce the risk of heart disease and possibly some forms of cancer.&#13;

In addition, The Basics of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry is written not by one chemist, but THREE chemistry professors with specific, complimentary research and teaching areas. David W. Ball’s specialty is physical chemistry, John W. Hill’s is organic chemistry, and finally, Rhonda J. Scott’s background is in enzyme and peptide chemistry. These three authors have the expertise to identify and present only the most important material for students to learn in the GOB Chemistry course.&#13;

These experienced authors have ensured their text has ample in-text examples, and ”Test Yourself“ questions following the examples so students can immediately check their comprehension.
